What does motivate visitors to spend their leisure time here and does the UNESCO world heritage brand play any role in it? By the way: is this brand visible at all?
The Association of Cultural Heritage Managers (KÖME) has launched a long term project to map the manifold stakeholders of the Budapest World Heritage site and to foster their engagement with the future management plan to the site (due by June 2016).
The world heritage sites are being strongly discussed worldwide upon their potentials to both reserve historical values as authentically and attractively as possible and in the same time to prevail as lively habitats for local people. The challenge is to develop attractive destinations in a way that they serve (and not alienate) locals. This delicate balance can only be kept by intense involvement of locals into the management of the given sites.
KÖME’s long term aim is to bring together individuals, NGOs, informal groups and heritage professionals with institutional partners such as the Gyula Forster National Centre for Cultural Heritage Management being the commissioned authority to manage the Budapest World Heritage site.
The first stage of this project is a workshop and a forum taking place between 13 and 15 June 2015 at the Central European University (CEU) as well as on the streets of Budapest.
Both events will be held in English!
The workshop (taking place on 13 and 14 June) will be conducted by John Veverka (USA), one of the worldwide pioneers in heritage interpretation. Participants of the workshop will have the opportunity to learn different visitor survey methods and to try them out on-site at the World Heritage site.

The 2-days workshop will be followed by a forum on the Budapest World Heritage on 15 June 2015 at the Central European University. The forum will deal with the question, how can the involvement of inhabitants and the survey of visitor motivations support the sustainable management and presentation of the Budapest World Heritage.

4:00-4:10: Introduction to KÖME and to the aims of the forum
4:10-4:30: Lecture by Dr. Lars Wohlers (KON-TIKI Interpretive consultation, training and evaluation) on visitor studies and the recent situation of visitor research in Germany, with reference to the experiences Dr. Wohlers had made in his common project with KÖME.
4:30-5:00: Lecture by John Veverka on the importance of visitor studies within heritage interpretation and its methods
5:00-5:20: Coffee break
5:20-5:35: Presentation of the results of the workshop lead by John Veverka (13-14 June)
5:35-7:00: Roundtable discussion
